The City of London

Founded by the Romans in AD50 and home to some of Britain's best-loved attractions, London city includes Tower Bridge, The Tower of London and St Paul's Cathedral.

The City of London is based on the original Roman town of Londinium, founded in around AD50. The City's boundaries have remained almost constant since the Middle Ages and it is often called The Square Mile, as it is almost exactly one square mile (2.6 square kilometres) in area.

Today the City of London is roughly bordered by Liverpool Street, Tower Hill, Blackfriars and Barbican Tube stations.

Geographically, The City sits in the heart of London, a short walk from the West End, historic Southwark, the South Bank, and Brick Lane.


Travel to the City of London by Train
The Stansted Express train from Stansted Airport drops visitors at Liverpool Street station, right in the heart of London city's business district.

From Liverpool Street station you can also catch trains to other destinations around the UK such as Norwich, Ipswich and Cambridge.

Travel Around the City of London
From Liverpool Street, it's easy to travel by Tube, bus, taxi and train into Central London or other local areas. You can also hire a bicycle and ride to your next destination.

Other main train stations in the City of London include London Blackfriars, City Thameslink, London Fenchurch Street, London Cannon Street, and Moorgate.

Travel into East London on the DLR from Bank station.

Take a river bus services from the banks of the Thames in The City for a great way to see London. You can also cruise along the River Thames with City Cruises from the pier outside the Tower of London.

If you're going to be in London for more than a day, it's worth buying a Visitor Oyster Card in advance. The Visitor Oyster Card is delivered to your home before you arrive in London. It is one of the easiest ways to get around London.

Things to see in the City of London
The City contains a rich variety of architectural styles. There are many churches by 17th century architect, Sir Christopher Wren, as well as financial institutions from the 18th and 19th centuries. You can also find 20th century architecture such as the Old Bailey and one of London's principal examples of concrete Brutalist architecture, the 1960s Barbican Estate.

Notable recent buildings in the City of London include the Lloyd's Building and Sir Norman Foster's eco-friendly 'Gherkin', 30 St Mary Axe.

The City of London's skyline is always changing, with the recent additions of "The Walkie-Talkie" building at 20 Fenchurch Street, and the "The Cheesegrater" at 122 Leadenhall Street.

Browse the historic Leadenhall Market, or head to Old Spitalfields Market near Liverpool Street station for a wide range of trendy shops and stalls.
